A Prayer for My Country

When our country's economy began its deep descent early last year, I wrote this prayer to use during my daily God-time. I'd like to share it with you now, in commemoration of our country's birthday this coming Sunday. These thoughts are at the heart of my writing mission of nearly 40 years.

Dear Lord,
The country I love has gradually more and more turned its back on you in the past 50 years or so. We have become lovers of money and things, greedy for more. Our security has been in our wealth and our own accomplishments, rather than your blessings. Our moral compass has shifted to ourselves and what we want.

Now we are in crisis. Greed and carelessness have brought us down. Many are losing their jobs, their livelihoods. While we may need a restructuring of our attitudes and priorities, Lord, please send your Spirit to heal our land. Protect your people from deep hurts, if that be your will. Show our leaders how to support our economic needs while still allowing painful learning opportunities, where advisable. Give those who are hurting your strength and comfort. And show your church how best to respond to the needs around us with effective help.

Bless our neglectful nation, Lord, and bring its people back to you.

Loving God, my nation, and its people,
Margaret
